Have fun Growing from Groceries with City Sprouts! Prepare your seeds, plant them, then observe and record the changes you notice as your seeds develop into plants.

Activity Instructions:

CitySprouts' Growing from Groceries, Part 1: In this video, Mr. G shows how to prepare seeds for growing from three different fruits: a mango, an avocado, and a lemon.

Materials needed:

  • Paper towels
  • Fruit (preferably a mango, avocado, and/or a lemon)
  • A helpful adult with a knife
  • Access to a sink

CitySprouts' Growing from Groceries, Part 2 : In this video: Mr. G shows how to sprout the dried and prepared seeds from Growing from Groceries, Part 1.

Materials needed:

  • Glass jars
  • Prepared seeds (from Growing from Groceries, part 1)
  • A helpful adult with a knife
  • Water
  • Toothpicks 
  • Ziplock bag
  • Paper towels
  • Gardening Journal (pdf)

After you have set up your seeds to sprout, record what you did and your observations in your Gardening Journal.

    This activity supports the practice of these STEAM Habits of Mind: Engage & persist, observe, reflect, stretch & explore.

    Tips for Supporting Your Children's Learning

    Get your child actively involved in their own learning and having their questions drive the learning. Let them observe and figure out, and try to hold back from answering questions for them. Instead, try to ask: What do we know? What else can we find out? How might we figure that out? Don't be afraid to ask your child questions.  Also, don't be afraid to say "I don't know--let's find out together!" as a way to respond to their questions.  Here's an article to help you support this kind of learning:  Of the Value of Saying I Don’t Know
