Additional information
This park is part of the Fort Washington Historic District in Cambridge's Cambridgeport Neighborhood (also known as The Coast). This small district protects the remains of a Revolutionary War earthwork fortification erected by soldiers of the Continental Army under the direction of George Washington. During the Siege of Boston, the Continental Army was greatly concerned about potential British attacks. Shortly after George Washington arrived in Cambridge in July 1775, they initiated efforts to fortify the area. Small earthwork fortifications, including the one at the center of Fort Washington Park, were constructed to hinder the movement of British troops along the Charles River. In 1858, the site was restored through a joint effort by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Cambridge.
