Free Food Seedlings for Kids: Henry Street Farms

By Henry Street Farms

Henry Street Farms will provide one vegetable or herb seedling to each Cambridge, MA student willing to commit to caring for a plant, until we run out of seedlings. Pre-schoolers are also eligible.

A young pepper plant
This is an ongoing program.

Delivery of seedlings will be organized in advance on a first come, first serve basis.

Ages: 4 to 18.

Grades Preschool through 12th grade.

Cambridge residents only.

Children must commit to caring for their plant. You must provide a container to grow the seedling in, or have ground space to grow it. You must have a sunny spot. Herbs can be grown in a windowsill; tomatoes need at least a 5-gallon container; pepper plants need at least a 10-inch pot. You must provide fertilizer for the tomato and pepper plants. Tomatoes and peppers must be given support, such as stakes or a cage. Optionally, children can agree to respond to a weekly survey about plant growth and harvest.

Additional information

Fill out this form to request a seedling. Either a parent or a student may fill out this form. Also: tell families about the program! If you wish to support our program, see our page for ways to help Henry Street Farms:

We have about 70 seedlings available; first come first served. Due to covid-19, we will tell you in advance the date and time of seedling delivery, and leave the seedling outside your home.

The goal of the program is to get more kids interested in growing food in our city. We hope this will also provide a fun activity for kids who are stuck at home now that schools are closed.

Thank you for your participation and support.
